Neil Diamond Classics: The Early Years The Brill Building-era compositions on COLUMBIA's 1983 LP of NEIL DIAMOND CLASSICS: The Early Years (PC 37892) remind me of a milestone in Neil's life that occurred some years earlier--his very first recording. In 1960, Brooklyn-born Diamond and guitar were scheduled for an audition at a Manhattan KAPP facility. As he wandered the studio halls, Neil was approached and asked to help out as a chorus member for a session in progress. Thus, his first ever record was an assist on Brian Hyland's "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini." The twelve tracks on "N.D. Classics" all date from Neil's 1966-67 BANG Records period. The husband and wife songwriting team of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich produced all these sides, and often played and sang backup. When Diamond took advantage of a contract loophole to leave BANG (after a dispute over "Shilo"), it set off a series of lawsuits that resulted in 1977 in Neil gaining sole rights to his BANG recordings. After a few years at UNI/MCA, Neil signed a lucrative deal with COLUMBIA. (Another version is that BANG's catalog was acquired by COLUMBIA and they turned over rights to Diamond's songs to the artist.) Although this LP was RIAA certified Platinum, it only reached #171 on Billboard's 200 chart. All songs but "Kentucky Woman" are in stereo. Even with later releases, this remains the only true stereo BANG-era Neil "best of" set. All songs are written by Diamond.
